Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with CNS infections

Infections of the central nervous system are associate with substantial mortality and morbidity. Knowledge of epidemiology, clinical presentation, the differential diagnosis and treatment options is crucial to improve recognition and speed up treatment.

The course, organized by the ESCMID Study Group for Infections of the Brain (ESGIB), has the objective to provide this knowledge to both young and established clinicians with interactive sessions, case based workshops and case discussions by participants. Talks will be given by international experts in the field from different backgrounds (Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Clinical Microbiology). The focus of the course will be epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of common and less frequent CNS infections, including bacterial meningitis, viral encephalitis, brain abscess, tropical CNS infections, HIV related infections and tuberculous meningitis. Furthermore, the non-infectious differential diagnosis of CNS infections will be topic of presentations.
